I don't speak Japanese, but I have become really good at looking very confused when someone speaks to me in Japanese and expects me to understand and respond. It's pretty amazing how far you can get with pointing and some keywords, though it doesn't make you feel very smart.
Is this trip sparking my interest and desire to learn the language? Definitely.
Does a new desire to learn the language help me out for the next day in Tokyo and a week in Sendai? Not at all.
